Watermarks were initially created to preserve a photographer's work and avoid potential infringement, but these days, they've gotten out of hand. They often completely destroy the integrity or quality of the photo itself. The Internet imagined what famous, iconic photos would like destroyed by the amateur watermark, and yeah, they're first-rate eyesores.
