Betty Boop was a popular character during the Great Depression, and still remains widely recognized today. Waldman was the head animator of New York's Fleischer Studios, and participated in the creation of the character. The Huffington Post regards Betty Boop American animation's first sex symbol, and Waldman won the Motion Picture Screen Cartoonists Award and the Winsor McCay Award for his contribution to the field of animation.
