Illustrative genius. Lofty praise, but Shohei Otomo is worthy of it. Working in ballpoint pen, Otomo depicts Japan's deepest underground culture with biting political analysis and technical perfection. There are shades of anime and punk, mixed with graphic design integrity. Shohei's got a strong lineage too, he is son of Katsuhiro Otomo, author of seminal Japanese film AKIRA.

Fools Paradise is presented by Backwoods Gallery in conjunction with Lesley Kehoe Galleries, Australia's leader in Japanese contemporary art. The exhibition runs from September 7 to 28, 2012.
