Salt Lake City Olympic Flame
City: Salt Lake City, Utah, United States
Year of Games: 2002
Architect: WET Design (cauldron), Arrow Dynamics (frame), Western Glass (glass pieces)
The Olympic cauldron at Salt Lake City took inspiration from the 2002 official motto of the games: "light the fire within" in combination with the theme of the games, "Fire and Ice", to create a dramatic steel and glass structure based on the shape of an icicle. Standing 72 feet tall, the flame within the glass and steel icicle burns at 900 degrees, Fahrenheit. Small jets constantly circulate water around the glass of the cauldron to prevent cracking under the extreme heat.
