Gallery: Black Apple x DJ Clark Kent's "Black In The New York Groove" Cover Art Illustrated By Sophia Chang

For the upcoming release of Black Apple x DJ Clark Kent's new mixtape, Black In The New York Groove, Black Apple founder Dao-Yi Chow hollered at illustrator Sophia Chang about designing a series of cover art that would capture the true essence of authentic New York. The talented artist nailed the challenge and created a total of 8 original covers to accompany the tape's release.

While we eagerly await the digital release of Black In The New York Groove later this week, which features an eclectic mix of tracks from French Montana to Fred Astaire, we were fortunate enough to speak with Sophia Chang about her involvement with the project presented by Hennessy Black.

"The original cover art features Spike Lee, Mike Tyson and Woody Allen. When you download Black In The New York Groove, you'll be able to check out the additional covers".

"We wanted to create an iconic pizza box theme and include typography and illustrations that had an authentic old school feel".

"One of the most challenging aspects while designing the cover was to have the printed watercolor match an original NYC pizza box".

"The reds and greens had to be just right, so I played around until I felt it matched what we were going for".

"I began the project by creating original portrait illustrations of iconic New York figures".

"After I captured the character portraits, I moved onto the authentic pizza box aesthetic".

"We wanted to include subtle NY elements like the Black Apple logo on DJ Clark Kent's fitted".

"We created the first round of artwork in late February and finished up shortly after without having to change things too much".
