Xaviera Simmons, One Day and Back Then (Standing), 2007.

Color Photograph, Ed. 2/5, 30 x 40 inches. Rubell Family Collection, Miami.

Xaviera Simmons uses her body as a tool to examine how history has been constructed and presented.  In her photographs, she transforms herself into characters, dressing up and staging elaborate narrative tableaux that draw on popular visual traditions and that are at once familiar, puzzling, and portentous.
