Karel Funk started his series of voyeuristic paintings when he first moved to New York from his native Winnipeg almost ten years ago. His portraits, which take inspiration from the subway riders he sees each day, are hyper-realistic and achieve a layered texture through many layers of acrylic paint on wood panel. Funk’s fur hoods look like fur, and the polyester jumps off of the work. Funk’s translations of the New York everyman are refreshing, check his work out at 303 gallery if you are at the Armory show in NYC this weekend. [303 Gallery]
