Harley’s newest Dark Custom series release gives a nod to the blacked-out Hells Angels heyday, but the bike’s smooth clutch, carbon-reinforced drive belt, tight street handling and low-profile design makes for an easy-to-master ride. Toughen up (kind of) and check out a first bike that won’t make it look like you just got your license.

DESIGN
Harley’s main goal with the 883 was to push minimalist styling to the edge. Like most Harleys, this bike does away with extra controls and dials, making it one of the quickest motorcycles to learn—important for beginners, who should focus on riding first. Continuing the no-frills concept, Harley went with a classic solo one-piece, 25-inch-high seat (a Ninja averages 32” for comparison). Add a rear passenger seat for the lady once you’ve mastered it.

ENGINE
The bike gets its name from its Evolution 883cc, 50hp V-Twin black powder-coated engine, a classic that first debuted in 1986. This new version features sequential port fuel injection, a technology that provides a smoother ride. The 883 is a good-sized engine that is friendly enough for a beginner but has enough power to keep you entertained for years. Note to first-timers: Keep your engine size under 1000cc to avoid going Ben Roethlisberger.

SUSPENSION
The 883 comes with a twin-sided swing arm suspension in the back that allows for a smoother ride than those tough-guy bikes that have no suspension. For your first ride, a bike with either a twin- or single- sided swing arm will provide the most comfort and control.
