ESPN has learned that former Boston Red Sox star slugger David Ortiz was shot at a club in the Dominican Republic. He has been taken to a local hospital. Early reports suggested it was a burglary attempt.

Ortiz was reportedly shot in the back. A suspect has been arrested. Ortiz is said to be in stable condition.

ESPN's Jeff Passan originally tweeted that Ortiz was shot in the leg.

Local Boston reporter Justin Dougherty is reporting that the altercation was not a botched robbery attempt.

Ortiz reportedly asked the doctor who was operating on him to not let him die because he is a "good man."

Alex Rodriguez offered prayers for Ortiz on Twitter.
