As was reported last week, Apple's iOS in the car was unveiled today at the Geneva Auto Show. What we didn't expect was a new name, though we think it's for the better. The system is now called CarPlay, and it'll be on the streets this year.
CarPlay will allow drivers to use some of the most popular iPhone apps—including Phone, Music, Messages, Maps, Podcasts, and Spotify—via their dashboard displays. Everything can be directed via Siri or the car's controls. First dibs goes to select models coming out in 2014 from Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. Down the road we'll also see CarPlay integrated by 12 other manufacturers including BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan, and Toyota.
Cars are clearly set to be the next battleground for iOS and Android. Earlier this year Android announced its own partnership with Audi, GM, Honda, and Hyundai. Going solely off of numbers, which never rarely lie, we're giving the lead to Apple for now.
