High school lacrosse players in Michigan are currently under investigation after they were accused of killing a guinea pig during a bizarre pregame ritual before a game last week, according to a new report. Fox 2 Detroit reported that several of the players reportedly smeared the guinea pig's blood on their faces as part of the ritual, and one source told WDIV a player may have even drank the guinea pig's blood during it.

The police investigation reportedly involves 10 of the 18 players on the Grosse Ile High School lacrosse team from Grosse Ile Township, Michigan; their season has been suspended until further notice. The alleged incident occurred last week before a home game that the team lost 13-6. Grosse Ile officials decided to look into the incident after receiving a tip that "one or more members of the District's lacrosse team engaged in cruelty to an animal."

Grosse Ile superintendent Joanne Lelekatch shared the following statement in response to the alleged incident:

"In cases involving these circumstances, our first priority is to ensure that law enforcement has access to the information it needs to conduct its investigation...Once law enforcement has completed its investigation, we will be in a position to assess the facts and circumstances and, if necessary, apply our student or athletic handbooks."

The Grosse Ile Police Department did not immediately respond to Complex's request for comment.
