Mark Emmert Confirms NCAA Will Appeal O’Bannon Ruling

The NCAA really doesn't want to pay players for any reason, and will appeal Friday's decision in the Ed O'Bannon suit.

It will come as a shock to nobody, but the NCAA isn’t too keen on paying athletes, for any reason.

NCAA President Mark Emmert has confirmed that they will appeal the decision from Friday that determined the NCAA has violated federal antitrust law and needs to start paying players in exchange for profiting off of the use of their likeness. Asked today on This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Emmert said that “Yes, at least in part we will” appeal the ruling, going on to add that “No one on our legal team or the college conferences' legal teams think this is a violation of antitrust laws and we need to get that settled in the courts.”

This is basically good news only for those who enjoy following courtroom drudgery. If you just wish the NCAA would yield a little ground here, you’re certainly not alone. The longer they fight, they are only going to make themselves look worse from a PR standpoint.

Not that that matters to them, clearly.
