Last night, we told you about one of the first feel-good stories of the 2014 college football season. According to reports out of USC, Trojans cornerback Josh Shaw injured both of his ankles very badly on Saturday. But it was a "feel-good story" because he reportedly did it by jumping off of a balcony in order to save his 7-year-old nephew from a pool.
"While attending a family social function at his cousin's apartment in his hometown of Palmdale, Shaw looked on from a second floor balcony to the pool below and saw his 7-year-old nephew, who cannot swim, in distress without help nearby," USC said on their website. "Shaw instinctively leaped off the balcony, landing painfully on the concrete below."
Warms your heart, doesn't it? Only one problem: That story might not be true.
No one at USC is accusing Shaw of lying just yet. But USC coach Steve Sarkisian spoke a short time ago and revealed that the school was looking into several phone calls that they received today from people who contradicted Shaw's original story.
"[Josh is] a good person. He's a good kid. He came to us with what had occurred Saturday night and I have no reason, no history to not believe Josh and his story and what has occurred," Sarkisian told reporters. "Within the last few hours or so, we have gotten a few phone calls contradicting what Josh said occurred Saturday night. We're going to continue to vet it. We're looking at it."
No other information is available right now. But obviously, if Shaw lied to USC, this would go from a great story to one of the worst stories that we've heard in awhile. So let's hope that Shaw told the truth and that USC is able to confirm it.
