There were several trade rumors swirling around Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks organization prior to the NBA trade deadline last week. The most prominent one was a three-team deal that involved the Knicks, Cavaliers, and Celtics that reportedly would have sent Carmelo to the Cavs to play alongside LeBron James. That deal never materialized, though, so Carmelo ended up staying put in New York.
One other trade rumor that didn't get as much publicity was a deal involving just the Knicks and the Celtics. According to a new ESPN New York report, Boston called New York and expressed some interest in working out a trade for Carmelo. It’s unclear how far talks between the two teams actually went, but according to the report, the Celtics were told that Carmelo didn’t want to leave New York and would be unwilling to waive his no-trade clause.
Would he be willing to change his mind sometime this summer if the Knicks fail to make the NBA Playoffs again? That remains to be seen. But it’s clear that there might be a few teams who kick the tires on a trade involving Carmelo once the summertime rolls around.
