The news was announced earlier today on Twitter, with the team's official account posting a video of Reid signing his contract. As a free agent, Reid had gone unsigned during the offseason and through to the start of the season proper, and this is despite generally being well-regarded as one the NFL's better defensive players.

As NFL reports, general manager Marty Hurney said that Eric Reid was "at the top of our list" when Da'Norris Searcy was placed on injured reserve.

Reid's former teammate and fellow protester Colin Kaepernick congratulated him on Instagram, writing, "He was the FIRST person to kneel alongside me. Eric is a skeleton warrior, continues to support his wife, two beautiful daughters and communities in need."

The Panthers' new owner David Tepper previously voiced his support for protestors, telling CNBC earlier this month, "These are some of the most patriotic people and best people. There are great young men. So to say that [they aren't patriotic] makes me so aggravated and angry. It's just wrong, it's dead wrong."

Fist raised. As far as the anthem, I’m told the Panthers kept the conversations with Eric Reid to football. Owner David Tepper was involved in the conversations, but the emphasis has been, these were football decisions. https://t.co/oxor391SxB

Eric Reid has a job, which tells us that one NFL owner has a different world view than the ones who run the league. Don't expect the other shoe you're thinking of to drop any time soon.

Per source, the Panthers signing of Eric Reid does not impact his collusion grievance. There was no settlement as part of his deal with Carolina.

I’m told the Panthers did NOT ask Eric Reid whether he would continue demonstrating. The signing was strictly a “football decision”. They believe he’s a good football player who can help them win.

Holy crap Eric Reid. God Bless The Tep and Marty.

Carolina Panthers needed a safety.
They just signed Eric Reid.
Falcons needed a safety.
They didn't.
Panthers win.

Torrey Smith on Panthers adding Eric Reid: "I’m excited. It shouldn’t have taken this long, a person with his talent. We all understand the reason why. This says a lot about the men & the leaders here. They’re making a football decision, but Eric is also a great man & leader."
