A Canadian athlete, his trainer, and his wife, have all been arrested at the Olympic Games in South Korea. Dave Duncan, who competed in this year's ski cross event, was detained last night by authorities along with his significant other, Maja, and Ski Cross High Performance Director Willy Raine.
According to CTV News reporter, Peter Akman, the three Canadians stole a vehicle and then drove it under the influence of alcohol. Local police claim that Raine, who was behind the wheel at the time, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.16 — the legal limit in South Korea is 0.05. Despite the severity of the situation, all have since been released, but the group is prohibited from leaving the country until their case is looked into further.
Duncan is a veteran skier who finished eighth for his country in this year's Winter Olympics. The 35-year-old has also reached the finals in other high-profile competitions, including the X-Games. Raine is also a prominent figure in the sport, and is the son of Canadian skiing legend and current senator of British Columbia, Nancy Greene. Both have issued apologies via the Canadian Olympic Committee.
"I would like to apologize profusely for my inexcusable actions," Raine's statement reads. "Words are not enough to express how sorry I am. I have let my teammates, friends and my family down. I would also like to apologize to the owner of the vehicle that was involved."
Not much else is known of the investigation, and whether the trio's passports have been revoked. In the meantime, COC head, Chris Overholt, has begun damage control in host city Pyeongchang. "We expect our athletes and team members to conduct themselves responsibly and in keeping with our Canadian and Olympic values," Overholt said. "We are deeply disappointed in the behaviours of these individuals. All team members are expected to respect the laws of South Korea and all places we compete in around the world."
