Two Japanese High School Pitchers Threw a Combined 1,398 Pitches in a Game That Lasted 50 Innings
Two Japonese high school pitchers combined for 1,398 pitches over the course of 50 innings.
This past weekend, Chukyo High School’s Taiga Matsui threw 709 pitches over the course of 50 innings to defeat opposing pitcher Jukiya Ishioka of Sakatsu High School-who should also be commended for throwing 689 pitches over the course of the marathon matchup-to move on to the finals of Japan’s National High School Baseball Tournament. In total, the game lasted four days and Chukyo won the duel by scoring three runs in the top of the 50th to win 3-0. A few fun facts: The game doubled the previous record of 25 innings, and had the contest gone a full 54 innings, the winner would’ve been decided in a random selection. That just wouldn’t have been fair to either of these two kids.
