Anthony Bennett made history Sunday when the former No. 1 overall pick asked to be sent down to the D-League.

According to Ball Don't Lie, the Raptors big man, who was taken with the top pick by the Cavaliers in 2013, asked Toronto to demote him for one game. He'll rejoin his NBA teammates for their matchup with Sacramento later Sunday following the Raptors 905 D-League contest with Delaware.

"Anthony came to us asking to use this double-header as an opportunity to work on his game," said Jeff Weltman, Raptors executive vice president of basketball operations.

Bennett, 23, became the highest drafted player to suit up for an NBDL game. Hasheem Thabeet, the No. 2 selection by Oklahoma City in 2009, held the previous ignominious mark.

Traded from the Cavaliers to the Timberwolves as part of the deal for Kevin Love in 2014, Bennett was waived by the Wolves after last season and has played sparingly for the Raptors. The Toronto native has only appeared in nine games for his hometown team.
