The Big3, Ice Cube's three-on-three basketball league for former NBA players, has officially become the first professional sports league to permit usage of CBD. The league announced it will allow its players to use CBD for pain management and recovery during the 2018 season in a press release Wednesday.

"The Big3 is uniquely positioned in professional sports as a player-powered league that looks at our players as partners not property," said co-founder Jeff Kwatinetz. "As a testament to our relationship with our players, we listened to their feedback on CBD, as well as feedback from professionals in the regulatory and CBD industry, and decided to take this major step to support their health."

More than 12 countries have approved CBD-based medications for professional athletes and consumers. Al Harrington of Big3's Trilogy is an outspoken proponent of medical marijuana and CBD. He created Viola, a supplier of cannabis products in Colorado, Oregon, Michigan, and California.

With CBD's scientifically proven healing properties, one has to wonder whether other leagues will follow suit in the coming years.

The Big3 tipped off its second campaign last week in Houston.

Nate Robinson hits the game winner then almost gets into a fight with Rashad McCants, who showed up to the BIG3 game wearing a Joker mask & Thanos glove.
