After starting this tradition with the NBA, Complex has made ranking the NFL teams’ Twitter accounts an annual ritual (you can check out our 2019 list).

Look, here’s the thing: with all the resources pro sports teams pour into digital marketing, there’s no such thing as a bad team account. Even the ‘worst’ accounts still deliver value to fans.

It’s just that some teams approach social media more conventionally, whereas others use the platform to showcase outside-the-box thinking and really make their squad pop. We’re here to honor the latter.

As always, be sure to share your thoughts on our ranking—we’re ready for the hate—by hitting us on Twitter @ComplexSports.

Check out your favorite NFL team’s ranking below.

The Cards have one of the most beloved vets in the league (Larry Fitzgerald) as well as one of the most exciting young playmakers (Kyler Murray), and a coach who showed real promise in Year 1 (Kliff Kingsbury). There’s reason to feel good about your team if you’re an Arizona fan. Brighter days seem to be ahead. In the meantime, the social content is decent—especially the behind-the-scenes video footage—but there’s not much out of the norm on this account.

With Ron Rivera taking over, the Redskins are ushering in a new regime. While he was in Carolina, the Panthers had one of the strongest Twitter accounts in the league—maybe Riverboat Ron can bring that good fortune to DC. This account is mostly run-of-the-mill, save for the occasional inside access and compelling video edit. We can’t picture a team owned by Dan Snyder would ever have too exciting a social media presence, though.

Can anyone who isn’t a Lions fan remember much about the Lions’ 2019 season? Matt Stafford was hurt...Kerryon Johnson was a fantasy disappointment...Matt Patricia kept his job. That’s about it. The product on the field was forgettable, but the Twitter content was slightly better, largely thanks to occasional trolling of opponents. The Lions also highlight important causes through social media, so their emphasis on social welfare gives them a bump in our book. Twitter is a great vehicle for helping people, and some teams miss that opportunity.

After a massively disappointing 2019 season, the Jets are full-steam ahead on 2020. Some teams fail to acknowledge their celebrity fans, but the Jets know what they’re doing in that regard. And when you have a guy like Jamal Adams providing fodder, you’ve got content for days. As far as fully utilizing Le’Veon Bell’s talents out of the backfield? Well...we’ll see about that.

The Giants keep things matter-of-fact on their timeline. They mainly post content and stories like a traditional media outlet, though they’ll occasionally hop in on a trending topic. They have a strong video team and leverage that medium often. If you’re a Big Blue fan, you come here to stay up to date on the team and get to know the players a little bit, but you don’t expect much sauce in the tweets.

The Bengals should hand the keys to their account over to Chad Ochocinco. This is a decent account: they’ve got dad jokes for days, and they’re also down with the cultural dialect. One issue for Cincy is that there isn’t a ton of personality (or talent, for that matter) on the roster. With Joe Burrow potentially joining the fold and AJ Green due to return, however, this team’s fortunes could be turning around sooner rather than later. Whether Zac Taylor can coach is TBD, but there could be a surge coming for Cincy.

We had to penalize the Browns for failing to capitalize on their star power. With engaging personalities like OBJ, Jarvis Landry, and Baker Mayfield on the squad, we hoped for more on the TL. Granted, the Browns had little on-field success to work with. Fans were in the sunken place this season, given the team’s struggles and the whole Mason Rudolph-Myles Garrett situation. We believe in you, Cleveland—both the team and the social media presence. There is potential here just waiting to be actualized. We’re pulling for a big bounce-back this year.

For the Dolphins last season, things were very bad, then they were not so bad, then they were actually pretty good! Fitzmagic led a surprising surge as the team congealed under Brian Flores. The Fins use Twitter to hype the squad and instill a new mindset, provide intel on the team’s potential moves, and promote important causes. With the prospect of Tua Tagovailoa very much in the mix, 2020 is looking much brighter for the fans in South Beach.

The Packers have hovered around the bottom of the league in our rankings each of the past two seasons. The reason? It’s not that we hate Aaron Rodgers. It’s just that, much like the Giants’ account, there’s little flavor to be found here. You get news stories and the ilk, but they don’t let the jokes fly often—and even when they do, they play it pretty safe. Again, nothing wrong with the professional approach to Twitter, but it doesn’t get our juices flowing...especially when you could be leveraging Weezy’s fandom.

When you have this much talent, and that good a head coach, people expect a lot from you. That’s why folks were so disappointed with the Rams’ 9-7 output in 2019. The content around these parts is good—they bring in intelligent, critical perspectives to keep fans informed, and also provide fun getting-to-know-you content about the personnel. Additionally, we give the Rams credit for openly acknowledging the team wasn’t up to snuff in 2019. You’ve got to appreciate the transparency.

The Steelers aren’t afraid to talk that talk on Twitter, and we always give teams bonus points for smack talk. Give us the smoke! We know the discourse gets aggressive on the field; let’s see some of that on the timeline. Competitiveness is one of the things fan the love the most about sports. The Steelers also deserve props for making the most of an emerging star in blowing up TJ Watt’s profile, not to mention getting dogs involved. Football and dogs—that’s a solid combination.

The Bucs had a baffling 2019 with Jameis Winston tossing 33 touchdowns and 30 picks. We give the squad props for highlighting women (a huge part of the NFL fan base) and keeping the GIF game strong. After ending the season 7-9 with two losses to close things out, Tampa is hoping for better fortunes under Bruce Arians in Year 2. If this pass-friendly team surges to compete with the Saints for the NFC South, you can expect to find plenty of celebratory GIF heat. We want all the GIFs, Tampa.

Like some of the other teams on this list, the Broncos made good use of video to give fans behind-the-scenes access. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much on the field for this squad to celebrate lately, so they’re still basking in the glory of their Super Bowl 50 win. With Drew Lock, Courtland Sutton, and Phillip Lindsay, though, the franchise should have better days ahead, and its Twitter team will be ready to take advantage of the Ws and an underratedly entertaining QB in Lock. The man likes to have a good time. Now if it weren’t for that Joe Flacco contract...

The Texans came this close to knock off the eventual Super Bowl champs in the divisional round, but DeShaun Watson ultimately didn’t have enough support. Though the season ended in disappointing fashion, Texans fans are feeling great about their franchise player, who is (understandably) the star of this Twitter account along with JJ Watt. Houston gets points for its creative video segments and documentary-style clips. Whenever Watt decides to hang ’em up, he should take over as social media manager.

Who saw the Titans coming this season? We sure didn’t. This account has an encouraging vibe that is consistent with the team’s up-and-coming fortunes. It also provides another angle on Mike Vrabel’s well-regarded leadership style. Everything Derrick Henry touches in the winter months turns to magic, so our proposal is this: Tennessee, give Henry complete access to the account in December and January. Talk about fire tweets incoming. Letting Henry control everything (we already know he can pass) might provide the boost this franchise needs to make a run to the Super Bowl….and a run into our top 10 in 2021.

The Jaguars clock in with the least-followed account in the NFL, and that’s a shame. They’ve had one of the better Twitter feeds in the league in recent years, though they slide back a bit in our rankings this year. It’s a small-market team, so you can chalk up the lower numbers to simply fan base size. The Jags might have more success with numbers if they had a more likeable head coach, who somewhat surprisingly was brought back. That said, the team’s personality grade has taken a big hit since Jalen Ramsey left town, so they might want to double-down on Gardner Minshew content, even if his future role is uncertain.

Considering the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck, the Colts’ 2019 season has to be considered an overall win despite missing the playoffs. 7-9 isn’t exceptional, but it’s also nothing to scoff at. The Patriots are the most followed account in the NFL. Of course, much of that can be chalked up to the team’s success—when you win rings every year, people are interested in following you—but the Pats also have a far more entertaining Twitter presence than what you’d expect from a team that has made “do your job” its catchphrase. For example, they highlight their youngest fans; for teams, it’s especially important to hook the kids early in life. They also make good use of the stars of yesteryear. You might expect this account to be lackluster, but Twitter ain’t a distraction when all you do is win.

This account mainly sticks to news and franchise history, but they weave in intermittent and hilarious pop culture references. With the franchise moving to Vegas, there will be plenty of opportunity for new content. If we had our way, this feed would just be a running log of Jon Gruden’s thoughts throughout the day. Imagine the tweets that would’ve been published during the Antonio Brown saga.

Everything seemed to be falling apart for the Vikings this season, but they pulled it together late and even mounted a surprising postseason charge. Regardless of what happens with Stefon Diggs, expectations are high for Minnesota next season. Expectations should be high for the Twitter product to continue to improve as well. If you come at the Vikings on social media, they will clap back, and as we said, we’re always here for the smoke. They also do well showcasing different sides of their players’ lives. We like that, Minnesota.

OK, so they didn’t make the Super Bowl...or the playoffs. So they had three of the best young offensive players in the league and still underperformed. But the season was somewhat salvaged on Twitter. The Cowboys roast their rivals and provide an inside peek into the brain of Jerry Jones—what more could you want from Big D on the Big T?

No, this account isn’t focused on fans jumping through folding tables or showering themselves in ketchup and mustard—though, of course, those are distinctive attributes of the Bills Mafia. The Bills let the fans generate that type of content themselves, but their official, buttoned-up Twitter account is still engaging. Josh Allen has electrifying (and maddening) moments on the field, and fans are hoping he takes the next step (or makes the leap?) to becoming a star. In the meantime, they can entertain themselves with top-quality, optimistic content and the occasional joke.

The Seahawks are a big climber this year, escalating 14 spots in our rankings. This franchise has been consistently great on the field—no matter what he’s working with, Russell Wilson always pulls off some magic—and the accompanying Twitter content is starting to fit the bill. A baby Yoda outfitted like Russ? Come on now. That’s top-shelf, guys. One other thing we like: the Seahawks are behind the city as a whole and promote the other franchises, like the Seattle Sounders. They also produce captivating artwork and support important causes like Black History Month.

This was a disappointing campaign for Matt Ryan & Co. on the field. They finished 7-9, winning their final four games to save Dan Quinn’s job. You can always count on the Panthers for creative social content. And with Matt Rhule in town—and potentially a new QB, too?—we’re guessing things are only going to get better from here. That said, the Panthers have taken full advantage of the Cam Newton Era, highlighting one of the most entertaining players in all of sports. We’re pulling for Cam to make a full comeback and light it up next season, but even if he heads elsewhere, the Panthers’ Twitter content will be on point.

The Bears wowed us with their comic book creativity in 2019, and in 2020, they continued setting the bar high. You can’t miss an opportunity to weave in timely pop culture phenomena like Baby Yoda. While Matt Nagy & Co. try to figure out what went wrong last season, and what to do about Mitch Trubisky, they know they can rely on a social media squad that can run with the best of them. Now, the real question—who’s faster: Tarik Cohen sprinting toward the edge or the Bears’ social media manager selecting the perfect in-game GIF?

This is one team unafraid of boldness, and we’re here for it. Drew Brees is seemingly back, and what would be better than a storybook ending with Brees leading his team to one more Super Bowl win? The New Orleans community loves its team, and loves its QB, and after all he’s done for the city (helping the area through Hurricane Katrina, supporting Steve Gleason, etc.) and all the team has been through in recent years (with referees and bad luck), we could all get behind a Saints title in 2021—kind of like how impartial fans were pulling for Andy Reid to finally get a ring. If the Saints do make such a run, you can bet the Twitter content will strike the perfect notes of attitude and sauce.

The Eagles maintained status as the best account in the NFC East and one of the best in the league. This team was an enigma in 2019, at times looking like a legitimate contender and others falling woefully short of that status, with the squad ultimately thwarted by a brutal string of injuries. Nonetheless, their Twitter game was consistently great. You can’t go wrong with content from The Office or a well-executed throwback to one of the franchise’s greats. The Eagles know their strengths and play to them perfectly.

This is, needless to say, an incredibly exciting era for Kansas City football. Patrick Mahomes leads the charge and is becoming a huge celebrity. Andy Reid has his first Super Bowl ring. The squad is loaded with exciting stars, from Tyreek Hill to Travis Kelce to Tyrann Mathieu. It would be a shame if all that excitement and talent were wasted on a weak Twitter. Rest assured: the people driving this account do their team complete justice with a timeline filled with hilarity and pop culture. Come for the quality football news, but stay for the entertainment.

The 49ers had a huge rebound on the field this season, going from 4-12 to 13-3 and coming this close to a Super Bowl title. But their biggest improvement may have come on social media, as they elevated all the way from the last spot in our 2019 rankings to No. 2 in 2020. Yes, we recognize the irony of them coming in No. 2 again (sorry, Niners fans), but this squad deserves big ups for investing in a more creative Twitter presence. They make heavy use of hip-hop, which obviously sits well with us. How many teams do you see leveraging DaBaby?! That’s not to mention that the Niners have arguably the best hype videos in the whole NFL. We’re ready to go on the field right now! The Niners are focused on making whatever changes are needed to get over the hump, but we have no idea how their Twitter game could get better.

The Chargers have been the cream of the crop in the NFL Twitter game for years, and they continued the greatness this year. For some reason, even the simplest tweets on this account come out looking extra fresh. For teams, excelling on Twitter often comes down to pulling random internet content into your mix and making it relevant by tying it to the team’s performance and activity; the Chargers do that exceptionally, as evidenced by the video above. The Chargers may have a shot at Tom Brady, or may not, but even if they don’t get the GOAT, this social team will make the most of whatever they have to work with.

The rich get richer. The Ravens have the most exciting young player in the league and the best Twitter account for 2020. So, why did Baltimore make such a big climb, up 21 places from last year? Well, they worked hard to produce original content, like the video above, which includes ‘letters to Lamar’ from elementary school kids. Sketches always yield big-time points. When you have the starpower of someone like Lamar Jackson, you need to take advantage of it, and the Ravens social team did just that. From the slow-mo clips to the mic'd up videos, the Ravens social team was hitting from every direction all season long.

It’s a winning combination when you have a dominant team on the field and on the keyboard, and the Ravens and 49ers executed that dynamic to perfection this year. They are our two torch-bearers for 2020.

Who will top the list next year? Who will plummet in the rankings? Stay tuned...
