Since several states signed highly restrictive abortion laws, there has been no shortage of celebrities denouncing the legislation and leveraging their influence to affect change
Ariana Grande is the latest to get in her philanthropic bag, as TMZ notes the singer has donated all of the revenue earned from her Atlanta concert to Planned Parenthood.
In a statement to People, Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Dr. Leana Wen praised the singer's benevolent act. "Ariana Grande's generous donation comes at a critical time—in Georgia and across the country, anti-women’s health politicians are trying to ban all safe, legal abortion," she said. "This is not what the American people want, nor is it something they’ll stand for."
"Thanks to inspiring support like hers, Planned Parenthood can continue to fight back—in the courts, in Congress, in state houses, and in the streets—against these dangerous attacks on people’s health and lives," the statement continues. "We are so grateful to Ariana for her longstanding commitment to supporting women’s rights and standing with Planned Parenthood to defend access to reproductive health care. We won’t stop fighting—no matter what."
Other celebrities have been stepping forward to aid in the cause. Travis Scott promised to donate profits from his merchandise sales to the organization. "I wanna just donate my net profits from our merch today to Planned Parenthood," he said during a performance. "I love y’all and I just want everyone to know that love is the strongest thing we can have."
Aside from music, several entities in the TV and film community are considering moving production of their content to different states in response to the controversial laws. Bob Iger, current Disney chairman, said he is doubtful productions will continue in Georgia, which adopted the "heartbeat bill." AMC said the network will "reevaluate" its activity in the Peach State if the bill goes into effect on Jan 1.
Recognizing the film industry's significance to the state's economy, Governor Brian Kemp scheduled a trip to Los Angeles to talk with Hollywood executives, with the abortion laws likely to be a part of discussions.
