Former NBA player and current Fox Sports analyst Corey Maggette has been accused of rape by Meredith Watson, the same woman who had previously accused Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax of rape, the New York Times reports.
Watson claims the rape occurred 20 years ago at Duke University. Maggette, who played for the Duke Blue Devils from 1998-99, has denied the accusation. "It has only been through media accounts and a statement from Meredith Watson’s lawyer that I first learned or heard of anything about these sexual assault allegations," Maggette said via a statement. "I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my life and I completely and categorically deny any such charge."
Fox Sports released a statement saying they are looking into the matter. "Fox Sports takes allegations of misconduct seriously, and we are looking into the matter. We have no further comment at this time," a spokeswoman said. Duke also said they "are in the process of gathering information to determine what policies and procedures were in place during the time period in which these events are alleged to have occurred, and whether they were activated and followed."
"Mr. Fairfax’s attack was premeditated and aggressive. The two were friends but never dated or had any romantic relationship," read a statement from Watson's legal team regarding the accusation against Justin Fairfax. "Ms. Watson shared her account of the rape with friends in a series of emails and Facebook messages that are now in our possession. Additionally, we have statements from former classmates corroborating that Ms. Watson immediately told friends that Mr. Fairfax had raped her."
