Canelo Alvarez, one of the most dominant boxers in history, has been removed from the World Boxing Association's middleweight rankings.

"Canelo has been removed from the rankings because he failed to enroll in the Clean Boxing Program, as stated in the rules," explained WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, according to worldboxingnews.net. "(He won't be allowed to contest a WBC title unless) he enrolls back (into the program) and he is back in the ratings."

In April, Alvarez pulled out of a highly anticipated rematch with Gennady Golovkin, which was slated for Cinco de Mayo, after Alvarez was hit with a pair of doping violations. He tested positive for clenbuterol in two urine tests in February, but Alvarez pointed to contaminated meats from Mexico as the reason clen was in his system.

Alvarez is currently serving a six-month suspension. He has reportedly refused to be tested until his ban ends—much to the delight of those who claim he was intentionally doping.

Canelo Álvarez has been removed completely from the WBC rankings as he refused to sign up for VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association). Making it harder for people to think he isn’t a drug cheat. 👀

The former WBC middleweight titleholder is expected to re-enroll in random drug testing and fight again sometime around Mexican Independence Day in September.

💉 Oscar De La Hoya says Canelo Alvarez’s refusal to sign up for the WBC’s VADA 365 programme is a non-issue because as soon as his next fight is signed, he will sign up. [@TMZ]

Golovkin is hoping he'll be Alvarez's opponent, but that fight could be pushed all the way to May 2019.
