Russian competitor Mikhail Shivlyakov showed everyone at the 2018 Arnold Strongman Classic this past weekend why no one should ever put forth “maximum effort” in one of these contests. As Shivlyakov attempted to lift 939 pounds, his face became red and soon after, blood started gushing out his nose. One of the commentators wasn't lying when he said that the 37-year-old gave “maximum effort” to complete that attempt. Check out video of the incident below at your own risk.

In spite of all of his efforts to push his body to its absolute limits, Shivlyakov finished in third. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who plays The Mountain on the HBO hit show Game of Thrones, ended up taking the title, defeating last year’s winner Brian Shaw. Björnsson set a new world record when he deadlifted 1,041 pounds.

Poor Shivlyakov damn near killed himself to wind up in third. What a shame.
