A little over a week ago Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said he would be selling the franchise following the conclusion of this year's postseason run. And after he did so a number of big names made it clear that they had some interest in acquiring ownership shares, including Stephen Curry, Colin Kaepernick and Diddy, though how realistic any of those odds are, and how serious any public figure's interest is, is anybody's guess.
With all that out of the way, we now have another celebrity figure to tie to the team, which will help add to the fun of speculating on it before some guy worth $12 billion who we've never heard of spearheads an ownership group that actually gets NFL approval. That celebrity figure would be none other than Vince McMahon, who has recently found his name back in football-related headlines due to his rumored interest in bringing back the XFL.
According to former ESPN anchor Jonathan Coachman (who should have credibility on the subject due to being an ex-XFL analyst, in addition to more than a decade of working for the WWE) McMahon could be interested in putting down some money to scoop up the Panthers. At least that's what he definitely seems to imply in this video from TMZ Sports. Check out his argument for yourself:
That being said, as you can see if you watched, Coachman still thinks bringing back the XFL is the likelier scenario. He also suggests that if McMahon goes through the trouble of setting up the XFL again it won't come tumbling down like it did back in 2001.
Some announcement is probably coming. We just got to wait a little longer.
