From his admission to using drugs or alcohol before every NFL game he ever played in to the fact that he's been suspended for 53 of those games due to multiple violations of the league's substance abuse policy, outstanding but troubled wideout Josh Gordon's history in this department is well documented.
Still, this new revelation is surprising, not because Gordon was dealing drugs during his college days at Baylor (in fact, at this point that's pretty shrug-worthy) but because he was banking a buttload of dough while doing it. Yes, according to a new Sports Illustrated story in which Gordon states his intention to remain sober, the 26-year-old WR talked about how he sold drugs during his prep career with the Bears. Gordon says he made more than 10 grand a month by selling up to six pounds of pot in Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin during his two years with the program.
Eventually, in 2011, during what should have been his junior season, Gordon was kicked off the team for testing positive for marijuana. He sat out a year, and then was drafted by the Browns. Since then it's been a series of great play followed by long intervals of inactivity.
The SI story also talks about Gordon's rough childhood, which included armed robberies, shootings, carjackings, and more drug dealing. Of that period of his life, Gordon said, "I didn't plan on living past 18." It's definitely an interesting read on a guy whose career has been ripped down because of his inability to stay away from drugs.
In more recent news, Gordon's comeback to the league has finally come full circle, as he practiced with the Browns this past week and (according to head coach Hue Jackson) will play this Sunday against the Chargers. Fingers crossed that's not just a brief circumstance until his next suspension.
