On Tuesday afternoon, following the objectively disastrous press conference that Donald Trump held where he appeared to double down on blaming "both sides" for the shit-show that took place in Charlottesville this past weekend, LeBron James tweeted out that Trump "just made [hate] fashionable again." He also appeared to endorse removing Confederate statues but...not 100 percent on that. He could've made it clearer:
As we said, James's tweet was a response to Trump's comments on the violence that took place this past Friday and Saturday in Virginia over the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue. During a rally by white nationalists, 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed after an alleged Nazi sympathizer plowed over her and several other people with his car. Trump had a very, very easy opportunity to denounce it on Tuesday and he botched it again, which emboldened these same white nationalist groups.
"You had a group on one side and you had a group on the other and they came at each other with clubs and it was vicious and it was horrible and it was a horrible thing to watch, but there is another side," Trump said. "There was a group on this side—you can call them the left, you’ve just called them the left—that came violently attacking the other group.
“You look at both sides—I think there’s blame on both sides. They didn’t put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you have some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group…you had people in that group that were in to protest, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park.”
As is the custom for tweets like LeBron's a lot of people told him some sort of variation of "Stick to sports," (though a lot also cheered him on). Anyway, here's a few of the thousands of responses his tweet elicited, but that he'll never read:
Previously, on Saturday, LeBron had similar criticism for the president:
On a related note, LeBron also endorsed Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election which helped her carry the Midwestern sta-- *looks up election info* oh, that's right. Never mind.
