Longtime UFC in-octagon announcer Bruce Buffer had an embarrassing slip-up Saturday night when he accidentally declared Tyron Woodley the winner of Woodley's UFC 205 welterweight title defense against Stephen Thompson. Buffer was likely confused by the judges scores, which were: 47-47, 47-47, and 48-47 (in favor of Woodley). While that would seem like a split decision, it is, in actuality, a majority draw. After leaving the octagon to double-check, Buffer came back and enthusiastically announced that Woodley was the victor, despite the fact that he'd been doing this for years and should probably know better:
As Joe Rogan interviewed Woodley, the UFC seemed to recognize the screw-up, and had Buffer come back to correct himself, which he did with much less passion. The whole sequence appeared to annoy Woodley, as he probably thought he was about to lose his belt:
However, because Woodley was already the champ coming into the fight, a draw meant that he would retain his title, and the only person involved who'd be taking an 'L' would be Buffer. Not to let this slip up slip by un-mocked, Twittera few people on Twitter made the natural connection to Steve Harvey's infamous Miss Universe screw-up.
Even the best have an off night.
