Liz Cambage has topped all scorers in the 2016 Olympics with a huge 37-point performance against Japan during Day 5 action at Rio.

The Opals, sitting at 2nd on FIBA rankings and undefeated through their first three games in Rio, were heavily favoured to take out 16th-ranked Japan on Friday morning AEST. However, similar to the way the Aussie men’s team tested the US on Thursday, a tough performance from Japan had the Opals down a massive 16 points going into the final quarter.

Cambage wasn’t taking any Ls today though, dropping a massive 18 points in the fourth to finish on 37 for the game. Her total was the highest for any athlete – male or female – in the 2016 Olympic basketball competition.

Cambage also racked up 10 boards, two assists and three authoritative blocks. Point guard Leilani Mitchell was also in fine form with 18 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds.

With the 92-86 victory extending the Opals’ undefeated run through the competition, the women’s team will now finish in first place of Group A.
