Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Eugene Monroe has created a website, eugenemonroe.com, in support the use of medicinal marijuana. Under "My Story," Monroe explains why he's calling for the removal of weed from the league's list of banned substances.

I’m calling for the NFL to remove marijuana from the banned substances list; fund medical marijuana research, especially as it relates to CTE; and stop overprescribing addictive and harmful opioids.

When speculation rose that Prince's death was caused by the use of opioids, Monroe stressed his concerns about the drug on Twitter because he has been prescribed opioids in the past to deal with pain.

These stories of opioid related overdoses and death are heartbreaking and concerning

I've been prescribed opioids for many injuries I've had in the @NFL

To know that opioids are so addictive in nature frightens me to ever take them again

Strongly contemplating forgoing the archaic drug policy of the @NFL and choosing a healthier alternative

My health is at risk with every pill!

Monroe has apparently found an alternative in medicinal marijuana and wants to do his part to raise awareness about the positive aspects of the drug. Especially in comparison to opioids, which, according to the Ravens offensive tackle's post, "71% of NFL players who reported taking opioids admitted to misusing them."
