AS Monaco Have Been Accused of Racism After Calling Their New Defender "Blackenbauer"

Don't expect to see that name printed on the back of shirts in Europe.

AS Monaco have come under fire for giving their new defender an uncalled for nickname.

The French club today unveiled the signing for 23-year-old Brazil defender Jemerson from Atletico Mineiro but instead of courting praise for their shrewd bit of business, they've drawn perplexed looks and raised eyebrows.

They've labelled their new man "Blackenbauer" in a bizarre tribute to legendary German defender Franz Beckenbauer.

European fans didn't think the nickname is appropriate.

"Blackenbauer" est le surnom donné par les supporters de l’Atlético Mineiro à Jemerson en référence bien sûr au "Kaiser" !

It's worth noting that Jemerson was given his "Blackenbauer" nickname by his old team in Brazil.

AS Monaco claimed innocence pretty quickly, revealing that they didn't come up with the name – his old fans in Brazil did.

Don't expect to see that name printed on the back of shirts in Europe, though.
