American Pharaoh didn't win AP Male Athlete of the Year. Steph Curry did. Curry joins Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Larry Bird as the only basketball players in history to earn the honor.
This caps a year where he was named NBA MVP, led the Golden State Warriors to their first championship in 39 years, and is on pace to retain his MVP crown. Curry has also sunk 134 three-pointers, which means he's currently on pace to break his own record for most made in a season (286). Basically, Curry overcame his undersized physique to become the closest embodiment of perfection basketball has.
"That's a real honor," Curry said to AP. "I'm appreciative of that acknowledgement because it's across all different sports. ... It's pretty cool."
As expected, Serena Williams was named AP Female Athlete of Year for fourth time.
