New Zealand All Blacks great Jonah Lomu has passed away in Auckland at age 40.

After debuting in 1994, the unstoppable winger played 73 tests for New Zealand and was regarded as one of the first true superstars of Rugby Union, scoring 43 tries his country.

Lomu was plagued by a chronic kidney illness, telling interviewers in 2003 that he had been suffering from nephrotic syndrome as far back as the 1995 World Cup.

Former All Blacks doctor John Mayhew confirmed Lomu had died unexpectedly this morning.
