Pete Rose received a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball back in 1989, but has been applying for reinstatement seemingly ever since.

There was a swell of support for that happening earlier this year, but that was quickly quelled once evidence turned up that Rose bet on games as a player, too

On Friday in Manhattan, Rose met with commissioner Rob Manfred to once again plead his case. While no decision has been made, Rose was told that he can expect one before the end of 2015, which will at least provide some closure to the situation.

Rose needs to be reinstated as a first step to getting inducted into the Hall of Fame, but something in the league's rule book may ultimately make that impossible. According to ESPN, Rule 21 declares permanently ineligible any MLB player, umpire, or club or league official or employee who bets on any game in which the bettor has a duty to perform -- which means that Rose is facing long odds at reinstatement, despite the commissioner's promise to consider it.
