Jim Harbaugh's former players have called him "crazy" and "clinically insane," and there's a decent chance that his wife, Sarah Harbaugh, would agree with those evaluations of her husband. Speaking with HBO Sports' Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, Harbaugh told the story of how he met his wife.
“Sarah was there getting take-out … I went up to her and asked if I could meet her. So, she said, ‘Sure you can meet me.’ I didn’t believe her, at first. I thought it was one of those fake numbers she was giving me. But I called her. Multiple times. Like, nine times before she returned my call.”
The man had the balls to go up to her, a complete stranger at the time, at a takeout restaurant and ask for her phone number. He's nuts! No Tinder, no mutual friends, no thirsting, nothing—just a direct yes/no approach befitting of a football coach. By today's standards, that's freaking impressive. Who the hell talks to strangers IRL anymore? Unfortunately, hiding behind avatars and the BeautyPlus app wasn't an option for Harbaugh back in the day. Actually, whatever—good for Harbaugh. He stepped the fuck up. Credit his confidence, but also note that persistence is key here, especially when it takes NINE phone calls to get her to call you back. When a phone call is the only way to get a hold of her though, sometimes it takes getting curved a ton of times to develop a stronger bond (or get called out for being creepy and not getting the message in her silence).
It all worked out though! Perhaps Sarah's persistence with her husband on a different topic will lead to a breakthrough.
