More Than 40 Percent of College Athletes Admit to Posting Something "Inappropriate" on Snapchat

Is this why college athletes suffer so many social media fails?

Unfortunately, it's not uncommon to see athletes committing social media fails in 2015. We put together a list of the 50 biggest social media fails in sports history back in late 2013 and, truth be told, at least half of the entries on that list probably wouldn't even make the cut if we remade that list today. Social media fails have become a part of the sports world.

Fieldhouse Media tried to figure out why that is recently by speaking with more than 1,000 college athletes about their social media habits and then putting together a very interesting infographic. They discovered that about 45 percent of these athletes never received any social media training at all from their schools. And as a result, the athletes admitted that they have made mistakes on social media. For example:

  • 22 percent said that they have responded to hateful tweets from fans.

  • 6 percent said that they have checked a social media account during a game.

  • 37 percent said that they have posted something online that they've later regretted.

The craziest stat to us, though, involves Snapchat. Of the 1,000 or so college athletes that were polled, 41 percent said that they have posted something "inappropriate" to Snapchat. Forty-one percent! That's roughly 410 college athletes who admit to posting something that could potentially come back to bite them. That sounds like a lot of scandals in the making to us.
