ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Indianapolis Colts and quarterback Andrew Luck are closing in on a contract that would make Luck the highest-paid player in the history of the NFL.

While the deal itself cannot be finalized until March 10, the team and Luck have held ongoing conversations and are circling a pact that would average about $25 million per season. There is, of course, mutual interest in making this deal happen; it’s a ton of money for Luck, and the young Colts have the foundation in place to have a contending team every single season.

By most measures, Luck has had the best start to a career of any quarterback in history. His 1703 yards passing over his first five playoff games are the most in league history, as are his 12,797 passing yards during his first three years in the league.

The biggest winner here, beyond Luck and the Colts? Russell Wilson, a fellow member of the 2012 draft class who has had a similarly successful start to his NFL career. Luck’s new deal will set the market for Wilson, who can now safely ask for $20-plus million per year as well.
