Shortly after news broke that a grand jury would not indict Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown, 4x NBA MVP LeBron James published an Instagram picture (embedded below) featuring Brown and Trayvon Martin. The post includes a caption that reads:

"As a society how do we do better and stop things like this happening time after time!! I'm so sorry to these families. Violence is not the answer people. Retaliation isn't the solution as well. #PrayersUpToTheFamilies #WeHaveToDoBetter"

With a brand as commanding as LBJ's, advocacy can impact the bottom line, a point Michael Jordan famously drove home with his quote, "Republicans buy sneakers, too."

And, if the comments in James' post are any indication, The King probably cost himself a few sneaker sales by making his statement.

On Tuesday's edition of First Take, Skip Bayless reacted to the post, applauding James for repeatedly taking political stands, even when it risks brand equity. And, in so doing, Skip compared LeBron rather favorably to Michael Jordan, a transcendent athlete who is decidedly less willing to speak out politically.
