People do some really crazy things when they're going through a divorce. But on Monday afternoon, a Philadelphia man took crazy to another level when he drove his family's 1990 Corvette into the Delaware River—on purpose!—after getting into a fight with his estranged wife.
According to Philadelphia Police, John Kramer—who was wearing an Eagles jersey when he was arrested—got into a dispute over his family's vehicles on Monday and threatened to drive a Corvette registered to his wife into the river if she didn't agree to give him access to a minivan that she also owns. And when she didn't comply with his request, he reportedly drove the Corvette into the Delaware, let it sink, and then swam to shore as several witnesses watched what he did. The 49-year-old asked those witnesses not to call police, but one of them did and Kramer was arrested a short time later. He was charged with a number of crimes, including reckless endangerment, and ordered to stay away from his wife who already had a restraining order out against him.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan publicly chastised Kramer for putting both himself and the police who had to go into the river to retrieve the Corvette in danger.
"It's just completely unacceptable, immature behavior," Sullivan said, "and the person that committed it is going to be held accountable for it."
Kramer tried to explain himself later by telling the Philadelphia Daily News that he drove the car into the river because he was "sick and tired of everybody fighting over a car I paid $36,000 for." But uhhh…aren't there better ways to go about getting rid of a car that you don't want anymore? Like selling it on Craigslist? Or calling CarMax? Or putting a "For Sale" sign in the window? Or…well, you get the point.
