In football, the game doesn't end until the whistle is blown, even if the play clock is at zero. Unfortunately for the Spanish Fork Dons of Utah's Class 4A high school football division, senior quarterback Jason Money forgot this rule, and cost his team a playoff victory as a result.

Last night, while hanging onto a 14-11 lead over Maple Mountain high school with 3.7 seconds left in the game, Money and the Dons readied themselves for a final play to run out the clock. On that end, everything went according to plan. The ball was snapped to Money, who scrambled right until the clock reached zero.

However, Money forgot to either hit the turf or run out of bounds, thus keeping the play alive. The refs didn't blow the whistle, and when the defense saw that Money thought the game was over, they immediately capitalized on his mistake. Stripping Money of the ball, a Golden Eagles defender ran down the field and into the endzone, giving Maple Mountain the victory.

Wow.

Now, we can't draw an exact conclusion on what happened here, but it should be noted that Money also plays basketball, a game which ends as soon as the clock is done. So, maybe he got his sports switched? In any case, it's a crazy play, and as a result of Money's gaffe, Spanish Fork won't be moving onto the next round of the state playoffs.

You can watch Money's error above. He probably didn't envision his high school career coming to an end like this, did he?
