Ray Rice's career with the Baltimore Ravens is over. The release of the video showing the NFL running back assaulting his then-fianceé and current wife Janay Palmer sparked a firestorm of criticism today towards Rice and the NFL. The Ravens decided that they no longer wanted to be associated with Rice and his actions. As a result, the three-time Pro Bowler is no longer with the team.
The action was not completely unexpected. Apparently, the heat on Rice had gotten so bad that he had even started to lose the support of his teammates. In a piece written today for Bleacher Report, writer Mike Freeman discussed the possibility of the Ravens cutting Ray Rice from the team. To add to this speculation, Freeman quoted an unnamed player from the team who told Freeman, "I don't think [Rice] has very much support now at all. I think it's gone."
In the offseason leading up to the 2012-13 regular season, Rice signed a 5-year/$35M deal with the team. As of his termination, Rice still had three years left on his contract.
UPDATE:
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has reportedly increased Rice's suspension from two games to an indefinite banning. Don't expect to see Rice in the league this season.
