According to TMZ Sports, renowned Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was taken into custody this morning after being arrested for a DUI in Maryland. Details about the incident remain unspecified, but TMZ says a statement from the authorities is forthcoming.

The arrest was not Phelps' first time in cuffs. In 2004, at the age of 19, Phelps was arrested in Salisbury, MD for an alcohol-related DUI. Following the offense, Phelps was able to strike a deal with prosecutors charging him with only 18 months of probation. However, in the state of Maryland, a second offense can earn you up to two years in jail, as well as $2K in fines, and a year-long suspension of your driver's license.

An 18-time medalist, Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time.

UPDATE:

TMZ Sports has uncovered further details about the arrest. According to the site, Phelps was stopped in his white Land Rover around 1:40 a.m. for going 84 miles per hour in a 45 zone. After failing a sobriety test, Phelps' B.A.C. was measured at nearly double the legal limit.

Phelps was eventually released from the police station after being charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines.
