Giancarlo Stanton Leaves in Ambulance After Getting Drilled in the Face (Vine)

Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is hit in the face by a pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The life of a Miami Marlins fan is a difficult one (thankfully there aren't many). You develop players over and over and then trade them, never retaining any talent and perpetually watching meaningless baseball when September rolls around. Tonight it didn't get any easier as they watched their best player, NL MVP candidate Giancarlo Stanton, leave the game in Milwaukee after catching a Mike Fiers fastball flush in the face.

Some of our older readers may remember a similar play effectively ending Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett's career back in 1995. And some readers who accidentally clicked this site may remember a similar play ending an extremely promising young talent, Tony Conigliaro's career back in 1967. That should tell you all you need to know about how serious this looming injury could be (as if your eyes didn't already see it).

To add insult to (actual) injury, the ump ruled that Stanton swung and so he wasn't even awarded first base. The man who came in to finish the at-bat (Reed Johnson) was also hit by a pitch, and it was also ruled a swing. Both pitches led to a strikeout. This almost certainly led to what happened next, the Marlins saying "Fuck it," before charging the field.

Both their manager Mike Redmond and their third baseman Casey McGehee were ejected.
