With the announcement that rookie Jimmy Garoppolo would assume the role of the No. 2 quarterback on the New England Patriots, it became clear that Ryan Mallett's days with the franchise were numbered. Today, Mallett was dealt to the Houston Texans for a conditional 7th round pick. In turn, the Texans have told Case Keenum that he will be released from the team to make room for the newly-acquired 26-year-old quarterback out of the University of Arkansas

The move is an interesting one since the Texans opted to take Jadeveon Clowney with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft over taking a quarterback or trading down. In time, taking Clowney will probably prove to be the smartest move out of all their options. However, Houston did end up taking a quarterback with the selection of Tom Savage in the 4th round. With Ryan Fitzpatrick looking like the temporary fix, the Texans are content with waiting to see if Savage can develop into the QB they hope he can be while Mallett seemingly waits in the wings.

Will this approach work out in Houston's favor? It may take a couple years to get the answer. Practice patience, Texans fans.
