At some point in the very near future, we hope to be talking about what Michael Sam can do on the football field as opposed to all of the controversy that he has inadvertently caused off of it lately. But for now, people are still talking about the comments that Tony Dungy made about the Rams linebacker recently and about how Dungy wouldn't have drafted him if he were still in charge of making personnel decisions for an NFL team. Dungy even released a statement yesterday to clarify the original comments that he made. But believe it or not, that just caused more waves.
Late yesterday, Sam himself finally chimed in, though, and his reaction to Dungy's comments might finally put this entire issue to bed. He was asked what he thought about what Dungy said—and his response was brief but also pretty terrific.
"Thank God he wasn't the St. Louis Rams coach," Sam told reporters, while laughing. "I have a lot of respect for Coach Dungy. And like everyone in America, everyone is entitled to their own opinions."
Will that end all of the hoopla surrounding Sam and Dungy? Unlikely. But at the very least, Sam sounds like he's moved on from whatever controversy existed here. And now, the rest of us should do the same. It's time to start talking about what Sam can do on the field and ignore everything else. At least, for now.
