New York City soccer fans packed out pubs from Battery Park City to Washington Heights, and everywhere in between, for the United States' Group G opener against Ghana yesterday, and the ratings numbers prove it. Sports Business Journal media reporter John Ourand Tweeted the results early this morning, and apparently New Yorkers are more inclined to tune in to the U.S. national team than they are the Jets and the Giants.

USA-Ghana did a 14.4 in NYC on ESPN/Univision combined. The average of all Jets/Giants games last season in NY was 14.1 across FOX/CBS/NBC.

It looks like it's not just a New York thing, either:

ESPN says USA-Ghana set a record on WatchESPN: 1.4M viewers; 62.4M minutes of streaming. These numbers aren't included in TV ratings.
