Can you drive from Africa to the UK on one tank of fuel? Apparently, yes.
On the eve of the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Autocar’s Andrew Frankel embarked on a mission to prove that a fuel-sipping Mercedes-Benz E300 Bluetec Hybrid could drive from Tangier, Morocco, all the way to Goodwood in the UK – a total of 1,223 miles – without stopping to fill up the tank.
After 27 hours behind the wheel and presumably a very sore backside, Frankel rolled into the Festival of Speed, having accomplished a staggering 73.6mpg (rated at 61.2mpg in the U.S.). What’s more amazing is that no special enhancements were made to the car at all, apart from Mercedes’ optional 21.1-gallon fuel tank. You could go out and buy this frugal E300 today (in Europe), or perhaps its E250 Bluetec cousin on these shores.
