Last week, Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari inked a 7-year, $52.5M deal to stay in Lexington. But, the big news (outside of the Bluegrass State, at least) is the job that Coach Cal reportedly turned down.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Calipari was close to a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which would have made him one of the highest paid coaches in the NBA. And while a contract worth $60 million-plus was originally reported, ESPN’s Marc Stein alleges a much larger figure.
As we just discussed on @SportsCenter, I'm told money details in Cavs' pitch to John Calipari were closer to $80 million range over 10 years
I’ve said over and over that I have the best job in the country.
Well, if the city of Cleveland was hoping to recruit LeBron with Calipari, then it's a good thing C-Town has a backup plan.
