A report from the Daily Mirror says that both Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Athletico Madrid’s David Villa are set to leave Europe and join New York City FC of MLS for next season.

Both will be playing for their respective nations (England and Spain) in the World Cup, making this a huge coup for MLS. While both are on the wrong side of 30 and are no longer top-tier players globally, they are nevertheless still excellent players who were in the first XI for two of the four Champions League semifinalists.

Manchester City-owned New York City FC will be joining MLS next season, so obviously they’re looking to make a big splash as they seek to immediately climb into the league’s elite. This move is certainly a great start.
