The Conference Finals don't start until Sunday, football season still isn't in session, and baseball is still in the regular season. That doesn't mean Saturday didn't see its share of greatness. Just look outside of the human race.

California Chrome, the Kentucky Derbywinner, has won the Preakness Stakes with the fastest time (1:54) since 2007. "He's a very good horse," said trainer Art Sherman. "We worked hard all year, and Victor rode him perfect. It's a dream for any trainer to do this."

Why should you care? This puts California Chrome in position to be a Triple Crown winner. You probably wasn't born the last time there was such a champion; Affirmed was the last to accomplish this feat in 1978. If you're feeling skeptical, that's understandable. There's been 12 other horses since Affirmed who won the first two stakes and lost the final one. The last one was I'll Have Another in 2012.

The Belmont Stakes takes place on June 7.
